about the artist

Michael started painting as a hobby in his spare time, and it progressed into a burgeoning passion for creativity and expression through contemporary abstract art. Whether using acrylics on canvas or experimenting with plaster, gravel, sand, and mixed media, he has embraced his imaginative side and grown as an artist. Michael creates with a minimalistic approach yet, at times, displays intricacies of depth, texture, and attention to detail. Many of the artist's works nuance bas-relief or brutalist influence and share a common thread—a band. The band symbolizes the road of life and, a broken band, “life interrupted.”

Sand flowing through an hourglass signifies the passing of time, and Michael utilizes the texture of sand as a medium to represent the complexity of life—full of ups and downs, inconsistency, uncertainty and, sometimes, adversity. Sand can also have abrasive effects, much like the wearing away of time and exposure to the elements, leaving us open and vulnerable. This same transparency and vulnerability comes through with each one of Michael’s works exhibited.

Michael is a San Diego native and graduated from Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Organizational Management. He earned a Master of Business Administration degree from California State University, San Bernardino. Besides being a painter, he is a novelist and published author.
