"I've worked in special education for over the past 20 years. During that time, I've had the privilege of meeting hundreds of children and young adults with various developmental disabilities and neurodiversity. Diversity has always been an important word to me, whether in life, business, employment, or education. But it's not enough to have representation. It's just the beginning! This is where inclusion, integration, and advocacy come in."
Students’ Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) prevent them from falling through the cracks and afford them the opportunity to continue their educational and life goals, get a job, maximize their independence, and reach their full potential.
Part of those goals include receiving services, e.g., healthcare, advocacy, assistive technology devices, and therapies. And for many students, art has been therapeutic and a needed respite.
Michael helps each student work on individual art projects. Students have the opportunity to tap into unrealized talent, express themselves through art, or find a voice and, in the process, find a pocket of peace in their day.
Students draw, paint on canvas, work with watercolors, create colorful mosaics, or experiment with plain and basket weaving.
