Ring of Fire
Acrylic, sand, and mixed media on 20x20 canvas
Artist’s statement:
“‘Ring of Fire’ is inspired by the volcanic island Pico in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean—part of the Açores (Azores) islands of Portugal—where my mother was born. The peak of the volcano is considered the highest point of Portugal at 7713 feet.
The volcano is an active stratovolcano. It erupted in 1562 and lasted for more than two years. The last eruption was in December 1720 and has since been dormant.
My hope was to capture a volcano eruption, complete with magma flowing to the surface in the form of lava stream, spray from lava fountain, and fire. The final result ends with volcanic rock formations.”
