Artist’s statement:

“Canção Do Mar means ‘song of the sea’ in Portuguese. The traditional fado style song was made famous by the world-renowned fado singer, Amália Rodrigues. The song captures the age-old relationship between the Portuguese and the sea. Poetic in nature, the lyrics reflect the loneliness and give-and-take nature of the sea’s power.

From circumnavigating the earth during the Age of Discovery to its long tradition of trade and fishing, countless brave Portuguese explorers, traders, and fishermen navigated the uncertainty. Unfortunately, many were lost at sea.

My father was a fisherman during my childhood years, and he’d be gone for months at a time. His absence was felt deeply. I remember my mother holding her breath those times he was away at sea. We were always thankful for when he returned home safely.

I tried to capture this fear, longing, respect, and even hope in this piece.”
